Project overview
The Xekong Thermal Power Plant Project is a 6 × 300 MW coal-fired power project located in Xekong Province, Lao PDR. Electricity generated by the Project will be transmitted through a 253 km, 500 kV double-circuit transmission line from the power plant to the Lao-Cambodia border in Champasak Province for export to EDC, Cambodia.
The Project marked an important milestone with its groundbreaking ceremony and commencement of construction on 2 April 2025. The first generating unit is targeted to enter commercial operation in December 2028, followed by the progressive commissioning and grid connection of the remaining units, leading to the Project’s full Commercial Operation Date (COD) in December 2030.
The Project will strengthen energy cooperation between Lao PDR and Cambodia by providing a firm and reliable source of electricity to the Cambodian grid. It will also support the effective utilisation of Lao PDR’s domestic natural resources, generate income for the country, and create employment and economic opportunities for local communities.
